Eleider Alvarez vs Andrew Gardiner

In the light heavyweight division and the fight of the night, undefeated prospect Eleider’’Storm’’Alvarez ( 13-0-0, 8 ko’s ) traded gloves with his former sparring partner Andrew Gardiner ( 10-0-0, 6 ko’s ) who took the bout on two weeks notice. Widely cheered entering the ring, Alvarez manage to lose the fans by his disappointing performance and unsportsmanlike conduct right after the final bell. Indeed, Alvarez refused to shake hands with Gardiner at the end of the fight, attracting the crowd’s anger along the way. On the other hand, Gardiner’s courage and will succeeded in winning the fans support. Scorecards results were 99-91, 96-93 and 97-93 all in favor of Alvarez, improving his record to 14 victories and no defeats in the process.

‘’The Storm’’ controlled the action with distance and straight right as Gardiner refused to back down, winning many battles while both were fighting at close range. Gardiner may have lost the fight, but won the crowd.

The co-main event of the evening featured undefeated southpaw Mike’’The Rebel’’ Perez ( 20-0-0, 12 ko’s ) against Carlos Takam ( 29-1-0, 23 ko’s ) in the heavyweight division. Perez suffered a very bad cut over his right eye from an accidental headbutt during round number three, which affected his performance. Many felt Takam did enough to win the fight, however, two judges didn’t agree with experts decisions as they gave identical 95-95, while judge Nicolas Esnault gave a score of 96-94 in favor of Perez for a majority draw.

In the bantamweight division, 5 times Canadian amateur champion Sebastien Gauthier ( 22-4-0, 14 ko’s ) of St-Jerome, Quebec fought Javier Franco ( 21-12-2, 9 ko’s ) of Mexico in a very exiting bout. The hometown fighter left the ring disappointed with a majority draw of 76-76 twice and 78-74 in his favor. Interestingly enough, veteran judge Guy Jutras had 80-72 for Gauthier on his online scoring card.

Known in the past for his Arturo Gatti like fighting style in the ring, Gauthier chose to box Franco with precise and repetitive jabs, followed by a large number of left hooks to the body and head. Nevertheless, Franco’s defense proved to be an effective one. The Mexican kept a tight guard upstairs preventing Gauthier’s attacks to do more damage. Both fighters traded hooks along the ropes in the middle rounds. Gauthier had the better in these exchanges and it seemed to be on his way for an unanimous decision victory but it was not be. The crowd booed the decision and felt the hometown fighter deserved the win.

In the welterweight division, undefeated Mikael Zewski ( 22-0-0, 17 ko’s ) of Trois-Rivières, Quebec punished Krzysztof Szot ( 18-10-1, 5 ko’s ) from Poznan, Poland. Throughout the first five rounds, Szot showed his resilience by taking tremendous left hooks to the body and head but could not do much against a much faster Zewski.

During the sixth round, Zewski caught his opponent with a solid straight right, Szot lost his mouthpiece and got on one knee, clearly hurt as referee Steve St-Germain ruled it a slip. However, Zewski broke down the Polish fighter for good. Indeed, the hometown favorite sent Szot another two times in round number three, again with two brutal right hands. The end came at 0:46 seconds of this very round. The winner by technical knockout and still undefeated, Mikael Zewski.

In the heavyweight division, Oscar’’Kaboom’’Rivas ( 12-0-0, 7 ko’s ) made his comeback after in important eye surgery, missing 13 months of action. On this night he fought Shawn Cox ( 17-4-0, 16 ko’s ) a power puncher and Barbados representative in 2000 Sydney Olympics. Cox was no match and went down twice by vicious right hands in the second round. ‘’Kaboom’’ continued his demolition work during the third round. Multiple right hands from Rivas proved to be too much for Cox. The Barbadian visited the canvas for a final and fatal time. Oscar Rivas remains undefeated with a technical knockout victory at 2:53 seconds.

In the light welterweight division, three times Canadian amateur champion Yves Ulysse Jr made his pro debut against Vango Tsirimokos ( 6-3-0, 1 ko ) from Genk, Belgium. Ulysse received a warm welcome by the Montreal crowd, quite impressive for a first fight in the professional rank.

Ulysse did not disappoint, his speed and precision earned him two knockdowns against his opponent in the opening round. From that point, Tsirimokos switched to survival mode with little success. The referee stopped the action during the fourth and final round after a barrage of punches form Ulysse. The hometown fighter impressed the crowd and earned a technical knockout victory at 1:52 seconds of this very round.

In the light heavyweight division, 2009 world amateur champion Artur Beterbiev ( 3-0-0, 3 ko’s ) of Montréal faced veteran Gabriel Lecrosnier ( 16-25-3, 1 ko ) of Saint-Lô, France for the opening bout of the evening. Beterbiev showed patience and power by dropping Lecrosnier inside the fourth round with two ferocious right hands. The Russian amateur superstar unleashed right and left hooks on his opponent as referee Alain Villeneuve called an halt to the fight at 2:44 seconds of round number four. Artur Beterbiev remains awesome and undefeated with a technical knockout victory.
